Information for potential residents or for someone seeking residency for another person.

House Requirements

This house is intended as temporary shelter for a mother in transition to a residence of her own or in the process of making educational plans for herself. If the mother later enrolls in school and has been a responsible resident while at GH I, then she can move into GH II, the student house, where she can reside for as long as she is attending school.

Genesis House II (Student House). Mothers 18 years of age, or older; children must be 12 years or younger (except for females). Must attend school or college full time (at least 12 hours weekly).

Genesis House III (Maternity House). Women 18 years of age, or older, with no children; must have proof of pregnancy.

Initial Contact
Telephone 321-723-3133 and leave a message or call the pager number provided in the recorded answer. Or send email to genesishouse@earthlink.net. Someone will respond to set up a telephone interview.

Telephone Intake
The application process begins with a telephone interview with Dona, our Case Manager. She will ask a number of questions: applicant's name, age, who referred the applicant, pregnant or not, number of children, income, transportation, childcare, student, etc. Applicants must have or apply for Medicaid or have private medical insurance. Dona will determine if the applicant meets the requirements for Genesis House and for which of the three houses. She will explain the general rules, as well as any special rules for the house the applicant is eligible for, and will set up an appointment for an in-person interview.

Application and Interview
Dona will interview the applicant in person, ask her to fill out a number of forms, show the applicant the house where she will be living, and introduce her to the House Manager. Dona will also provide the new resident with information on various support agencies and services: food stamps, WIC supplemental food packages, Brevard County Health Clinics, Brevard Job Link, etc.

Responsibilities
Residents have a number of responsibilities: keeping their room clean and neat, preparing their own meals, buying their own food (although pantries in each house are kept stocked with donated canned and dry foods), cleaning up the kitchen after each use, washing and drying their own clothes and bed linen, etc. Residents provide their own transportation (their own car, friends, bus, etc.). Residents perform assigned daily chores to help keep the house clean. Residents meet once a week with the Case Manger to review their weekly accountability progress. Residents meet for one hour each week with a counselor from Circles of Care. They also attend weekly meetings with their House Manager and attend information classes when applicable (i.e., financial, budgeting, CPR, etc.).

Rules
As would be expected in any group home situation, there are rules the residents must follow. These rules are intended to promote harmony and the safety and welfare of all residents and their children. The rules cover such things as rise times, curfew times, bed times, behavior, privacy, dress, drug testing, guests, overnight stays away from the house, TV and radios, smoking, phone calls, school children, baby gates, and laundry.

Rent
Residents are expected to pay a nominal daily fee to help with expenses.
