IN AUGUST, 1977, a small group of volunteers rented an apartment for three pregnant women who had no place to live. In November, 1977, Genesis House, Inc., was founded, and the first Genesis House was purchased with a five-year balloon mortgage. Many donations made it possible for Genesis House, Inc. to purchase two more homes. All three shelter homes have apartments for live-in house managers.
The first Genesis House sheltered pregnant women and teens. Presently, this house is called Genesis House I, and it shelters adult mothers with children, who are homeless or in transition. These residents stay short-term while they arrange more permanent living arrangements or make educational plans for themselves. In March, 1984, Genesis House II opened for student mothers over 18 years old and their children. This is a home for women with limited resources who are in the process of furthering their education and work toward independence, working on a high school diploma, G.E.D. or studies at a college or training program. We also shelter women who are pregnant and have another child in this facility. Many of these women come to us from abusive relationships. Genesis House III opened in September, 1989. This home shelters pregnant women. |
